An Inviting Family Home
Area designers help this couple create the perfect home for their three sons
Jason and Summer Stubbs moved from Michigan to Northwest Arkansas a few years ago to be near family. Summer is originally from the Joplin area, and her brother lives in Bentonville. Jason, a cosmetic surgeon, opened Stubbs Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Fayetteville.
“We moved at the height of the post-COVID craziness when houses were selling super-fast above asking price,” Summer said.
That made it hard to find a house. But in April 2022, they found a home under construction in west Fayetteville. “We took over the build from someone else who decided not to finish it,” Summer said. “So, the floor plan was already chosen, and the framing was done.”
The Stubbses enjoyed the area the house was in and felt it was a good family home for them and their three sons. The house sits in a wooded setting on nearly five acres. “We liked that it had some woods and open space for the boys to run and move,” Summer said.
The neighborhood is hilly, with walking trails through the woods and an area shared by the subdivision featuring a pickleball court, basketball goal and pond. The Stubbses’ sons fish at the pond frequently.
As for the house, the private primary bedroom suite, abundant storage, natural light, and the open kitchen and large center island for easy entertaining are all aspects that appealed to Jason and Summer.

The couple turned to Erin Lefler and Meghan Teeter with Lefler Teeter Designs to help finalize design selections for their home.

Because the Stubbses took over the build partially through, they had to make some quick decisions to keep the build progressing. Summer said she was grateful to have Lefler and Teeter to lean on for paint, furniture, and rug choices. They were “wonderful for tying together the textures and colors and giving the home the cohesive feel she desired,” she said.
The designers added texture in the fabrics and finishes. “Because Summer wanted to stay mostly neutral in her main living spaces, we brought in texture to add character,” Lefler said. “Her bar stools are a rattan and natural oak finish that complemented her floors. We used hand-knotted wool rugs throughout her spaces and matching leather sofas. We used accessories like textured vases and baskets to finish off the space.”

Bringing the stone in from the exterior and wrapping it around the entryway brought the outside in, Lefler said. The same stone is also carried onto the fireplace wall. “We like the earthy feel with the wood and stone entryway,” Summer said.
In the kitchen, Taj Mahal quartzite wraps all the way up the oven wall and throughout the kitchen. It is featured in the powder bath with a Taj Mahal floating vanity as well.
The dark, moody office off the living area has a stained-wood ceiling and features Jason’s grandfather’s lamp. “His grandfather was a builder who immigrated from Norway to the United States and built custom homes in Connecticut for decades,” Summer said. “The lamp was gifted to him by one of his clients and features all the tools a builder would use during that era.”
A stained-glass wall hanging of the Stubbs family crest made by Summer’s sister-in-law also graces the office.
The designers furnished the main living spaces to reflect the style of the homeowners and complement the architecture and finishes of the home. “We wanted a stylish yet practical home to raise our kids,” Summer said. “Our desire was to create a peaceful and relaxing place for our family and friends to gather — a place with warm colors, great natural lighting, comfortable areas to entertain and earthy elements.”
Each son has his own bedroom and bath, with a hunting theme in two of the bedrooms. The eldest’s room has a bear picture and set of horns above his bed, and the youngest has a mural of an elk in a wooded mountain setting, which was painted by Summer’s niece, Cameryn Vannaman, a high school student from Bentonville.
In the backyard, the family added a pool and a pool house where company can stay and their kids can hang out. It includes a bedroom, recreation area with table tennis, work out room and a kitchenette. Green turf wraps the pool area and has become a putting green. There’s also an outdoor wood-burning fireplace with gas jets.
“Each of the homes in the subdivision is on at least an acre or more, and they all have character,” Summer said, adding that this makes their house feel private. “We enjoy the trees and being in the woods and seeing the different seasons.”
Lefler describes the home as warm, neutral, elegant and comfortable, calling it “transitional with an edited feel and finishes that support their active lifestyle with three young boys.”
Summer feels she achieved her goal of creating an inviting family home with warm color tones. “Even with the practical choices like the leather couches, they warm up the space as opposed to everything being completely white,” she said. “I wanted people to come in and feel instantly at home — where the house was nice, and it was pretty, but it didn’t feel untouchable.”
The Stubbses feel at home now, near family and in a house that’s a great place for their boys to grow up.
